This skin infection can occur anywhere on the body, although on the face takes the form of butterfly, in addition to unsightly, it is very annoying and not easy to eradicate, however, it is important that you know it is very contagious.
In France in the eleventh century, there was the largest epidemic of erysipelas, which recognizes the history of such dimension that was called "St. Anthony's fire" - mainly affecting undernourished and postpartum women, in particular, alcoholics. With the discovery of antibiotics (in the nineteenth century) practically disappeared, however, in recent years there has been an increased incidence of this disease in industrialized countries, with no explanation yet.
Erysipelas is an infectious and contagious skin produced by a bacteria (streptococcus group A), which enters the body through small cuts, abrasions from scratching, insect bites, scars from surgery or open sores legs.
First appears as a red spot on the skin surface then spreading and as old marks fade, new ones appear. On the face, erysipelas acquires the characteristic shape of a butterfly covering cheeks and nose, although very often affects the arms or legs and causes obstruction of lymphatic drainage (the one that helps the disposal of toxic compounds in the body).
This condition is more common in the elderly, infants and newborns, who may develop after an infection in the navel abused. Also at high risk are those who have impaired immune system (protection against infectious microorganisms), varicose veins or diabetes sufferers, as well as heart or kidney disease.
When strep takes between 1 and 3 days into the body, after which there will be fever from 39 to 40 degrees, chills, malaise, nausea and vomiting, headaches and joint pain. Subsequently the said spot appears in bright red skins, which cause inflammation, increased temperature in the area and pain, especially when pressed.
The lesions have well-defined margins that extend as the infection spreads; the vesicles (blisters) are common and can occur in the elderly superficial bleeding.
In adults it is more common on the face, ears and legs, while young children may be located in the abdomen. When it affects the face is important to look for sources causing the oral cavity.
The disease progresses over a period of three weeks, leaving a residual red pigmentation in the area that has been presented. It is not uncommon that manifests itself in sexual organ, which produces the same undesirable symptoms, although there have been cases where the infection can spread to other areas such as joints, bones and heart valves, which endangers the life the patient.
Sleeping with the enemy
Group A streptococci can cause different and dangerous infections, for example in the throat (tonsillitis), blood (septicemia) and injuries, however, can live in the intestines, airway or other body part without causing problems and remain so for long.
In the skin, bacteria tend to lead to infection in the deeper layers, where they often spread rapidly and cause tissue destruction (Necrotizing fasciitis), for unknown reasons this seems to be the characteristic feature of erysipelas today.
To the relief of local discomfort, especially the feeling of tightness, warmth, itching and sometimes pain, you can use cold compresses with ice and oral analgesics. If fever is you can use medicines to lower temperature and ease muscle pain.
The best way to prevent erysipelas is addressing the possible causes, such as patients with venous insufficiency or varicose veins should carry out treatment and care of these disorders to prevent relapse. If the source is a fungal infection between the toes, should be long enough to eliminate it to prevent recurrence of erysipelas.
Do not neglect any kind of injury, especially if you have diabetes, wash with soap and water and apply an antiseptic counter. Finally, if throughout his life has been one of the diseases caused by streptococcus group A, check with your doctor that bacteria are not staying in your body because it can "camouflage" for a long time, suddenly appear and cause serious problems.
